Compassion House is a non-profit transitional housing ministry which has been offering aid to families in Issaquah since 1998. The residents are single mothers and their children, and the goal of the ministry is to provide the women with the skills and experience to be able to be self-sufficient. Assistance can include life skills training, making connections with other ministries and social service agencies, finding transportation solutions, resolving legal issues, and financial counseling. The model is very relational, and volunteers are asked to share life with the families and really get to know them, sharing God’s love with each family while working with them to break the cycle of dependency on public assistance.
How can you get involved? Resident support is headed up by teams of 4-6 people who meet with the resident monthly, brainstorm about how to meet her needs, and cheer her on when she meets her goals. Other volunteer opportunities include yardwork, tutoring, furnishing, tech support, and legal aid. Contact Julie Bilbro if you have a specific skill to volunteer or would like to get involved.
