Liturgy Lessons (Page 12)
”Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one other in all wisdom, singing Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God”
Colossians 3:16
Singing was never intended to be a spectator sport, reserved for the few experts. There are over 500 references in the Bible to singing, and the biblical emphasis on this practice is why singing is in the DNA of God’s people. It is a gift from the Great Composer himself; after singing to life His symphony of the spheres, and before He even exhaled into existence mankind (his Magnum Opus), He already knew that we would need to have a method to express the depths of our response to His love and mercy. So God wrote His themes upon our hearts, and the creator spiritus gives birth to song.
The goal of these Liturgy Lessons is to spiritually curate these songs in order to enhance your worship, so that you may lift your whole heart to the Lord. Each song is chosen based on criteria of biblical fidelity, sound theology, and well-crafted melodies, which encourage full-throated praise. Each song has a story, and its purpose in our worship is to aid in a re-telling of the Great Story of our redemption – from creation to re-creation. Each song also serves a liturgical function within the service. The music is the servant, never the object of praise itself; that is reserved for Jesus! May our worship of the Lord be a continuous outpouring from Sunday to Sunday, and all the hours in between. With our hearts redeemed, we want to release a “Holler-lujah”, as we “break forth together into singing” (Isaiah 52:9)!
Each Liturgy Lesson contains an outline of the full liturgy, highlighting a few hymns for each week, providing you some background info, as well as links to the sheet music and, when necessary, suggested recordings.
